Susan Schoenberger, a West Hartford writer and editor, will discuss her third novel, “The Liability of Love,” on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. on Zoom as part of the Tolland Public Library Foundation’s Eaton-Dimock-King Authors Series.

Schoenberger has a long history of working for news organizations, including The News and Observer, The Baltimore Sun and the Hartford Courant. She is now director of communications for Hartford Seminary.

Schoenberger’s debut novel, “A Watershed Year,” won the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition in 2006 under the title “Intercession.” Her second novel, “The Virtues of Oxygen,” was published in 2014.

“The Liability of Love” tells the story of Margaret Carlyle, who is sexually assaulted on a first date in college. As the years pass, each life decision she makes seems driven by what happened that night. The novel examines what happens when we try to bury the past as well as the consequences of confronting it. Along the way, it looks at class and privilege, the mysteries of marriage and the destructive power of secrets.

Amber Smith, a New York Times bestselling author, describes the book as a “heart-wrenching, compassionate portrayal of survival – of what happens when old wounds are left untended” and “when quiet pain refuses to stay silent.”

Since 2010, the EDK series has brought well-known authors to Tolland, including Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Dan Barry, Steven G. Smith and Susan Campbell; Lucy Anne Hurston, Chris Knopf, Caragh O’Brien, Dawn Metcalf, Denis Horgan, Jeff Goldberg and Cindy Rodriguez.
